Christmas Parrrrrrty!!!!

What a lovely ending to our term with a super party!!! We had so much fun playing pass the parcel, musical statues, dancing competitions, pin the tail on the donkey and some yummy food!!! Fantastic!!!

We even have some food left over for tomorrow too, yumyum!!

This afternoon we enjoyed a lovely assembly by Mrs Longhorn explaining the reason we make Christingles and what each part represents..

And the ribbon is a big hug to wrap everything together...

 

We then went back to class and made our own!!!! 

Our Trip to See Florence Nightingale at Thackray Museum!

Today we went on our trip to bring our topic on Florence Nightingale to life....I am so proud of your wonderful behaviour and enthusiasm. We enjoyed every second!!! What was your favourite thing?

Grace!

 

Grace used some super bossy verbs in her Georges Marvellous Medicine instructions. She had wonderful handwriting and used correct punctuation. She showed she knew the required elements her instructional writing needed and made them interesting for the reader!

Visual Literacy: The Journey: John Lewis Christmas Advert 2012

This week in literacy we have been using the very popular John Lewis Christmas advert 'The Journey' to help us with our inference and deduction skills....looking deeply into texts to understand meaning and develop our ideas.

Here we are very engaged and producing some fantastic sentences and pieces of writing... I was astounded and the quality of writing and ideas you were all coming up with. Fantastic vocabulary being used and some interesting ideas about the snowman and snowlady we didn't think of at first!!

The Christmas Story

Next week in literacy we are revisiting the Christmas story and thinking about the symbols of light within the Christian celebration. We will also be thinking about the range of symbols of light and why it is so important, comparing it to other religions such as Hinduism and their festival of light.

Our Bank of Hillerby Classopoly Treat!!

Last week we achieved over the schools 97% full attendance target for the week which meant we got a turn on the classopoly board in assembly. We rolled the dice and landed on Mrs Hillerbys treat....'Bank of Hillerby juice and biscuits!!' But we were in for an even bigger treat when we went to the green room this afternoon for our award....Miss Hillerby had Christmas chocolate coins for us!! How fantastic!!!! We very much enjoyed ourselves!!!

Art Workshops!!

Today we had a visitor come into school to run some art workshops in the hall. He showed us lots of artwork by a range of famous artists and we had to go on an art treasure hunt to find the different features within the paintings and drawings.

We then had to use our imagination to produce our own piece of artwork from a simple shape in the middle of the piece of paper.

What a wonderful and festive morning we had on Friday!! The classroom looks lovely and Christmassy now and you all have lots of decorations to take home at the end of term too!!

Practical Maths Problems!!

In maths at the moment we are working on our underlying maths skills to solve practical maths problems. This mean we are solving a range of word problems by deciding whether we need to use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division skills, and then what do we need to do with the numbers to work out the answer? 

We have been trying these skills with soldiers from the Crimean War this week!!

Have a go at this one...

If there are 8 soldiers in the Scutari hospital and each of them need 2 bandages, how many bandages would Florence need all together?

and this one...

If there are 15 soldiers in the hospital and 4 get better and go back out to the war, and 5 more go home, how many are left?

What about this tricky one....?

There are 26 soldiers in the hospital laying in beds, and 33 soldiers sat on chairs,, how many soldiers altogether? (You may need to use partitioning and a blank number line for this)

Information Texts!!

Over the next couple of weeks we are thinking about information texts and understanding facts all about The Crimean War and Florence Nightingale. We are making newspaper article, Emily came up with a great name for her news paper... 'Nightingale News!'

We are also making our own non-fiction books and playing some hot seating games in 2's or 3's. One of us has to pretend to be Florence and the other asks them questions to find out information using the non-fiction books!

Anti Bullying Week!!

We came to school in our blue jeans to show our support for anti-bullying week. We did lots of seal activities around bullying and we were also very lucky to have Steph from flex Dance come and work with us to make dance routines to songs by people who were bullied in their past. Together we can beat bullying!!

Instructional texts!!

Over the past couple of weeks we have been practising our skills at writing instructions. We have had a go at many activities, writing instructions for our own marvellous medicine, writing instructions for Florence Nightingale and the Scutari hospital, recording our instructions to look after the poorly teddy and lots of other instructions!!

Our learning logs were also to write a set of instructions and I have been so impressed with the skills and range of instructions you have chosen to tell me about! Look out for the photos coming soon!!

Big Write Star of the Week

Nathan

 

Nathan wrote a fantastic set of instructions. He used bossy verbs, kept each instruction short and clear and numbered them to show order. His handwriting was neat with his letters sat on the line and all a similar size. Well done Nathan!!

 

George's Marvellous Medicine!

In literacy we are currently developing our instructional text writing skills and this week we are writing instructions to make our own marvellous medicine, following on from reading Roald Dahl's classic, 'George's Marvellous Medicine'.

Fun Maths Morning with Year 5!

This morning we had a fun practical maths morning across school and year 2 mixed with year 5 to take part in a range of activities to develop our problem solving skills. I was very proud of the enthusaism and team work displayed over the morning and we all had a fabulous time!

We were very lucky to have a special visitor today to come and talk to us about Diwali! It is Diwali tomorrow and Hindu people will be celebrating with lots of exciting events. Thank you to Tayjus' Dad!

Remembrance Day

We had a very special assembly today to discuss the importance of remembrance day and help us understand why people wear the Poppy at this time of year. We also joined together for 2 minutes silence to show our  respect.
