Flotsam by David Wiesner

This week in literacy we are going to be using the picture book 'Flotsam' by David Wiesner to encourage imagination and description. It is a fantastic story with lots of opportunity for description and development of own opinion and ideas. You can watch  brief introduction for the story here...

Our trip to Scarborough!!

Today we set off on a journey to sunny Scarborough for our trip linking to our seaside topic!!! Although it wasn't quite warm or dry enough for a paddle, we still had lots of fun and saw lots of interesting things!!!

A Story In The Garden...

This afternoon Miss Coomber very kindly oferd to take you all to the school garden to have milk and a story! It was a lovely afternoon and a shame not to be outside!!

World Environment Day, Our Ideas.

Yesterday, on World Environment Day, we had an assembly allabout recycliand we now have new orange recycling boxes in our class for clean, dry paper, cardboard, plastic and metal.

Wednesday 5th June is World Environment Day!

 

This year the theme is Think.Eat.Save and we had an assembly today to think about how we can waste less food and look after our environment by encouraging our grown ups to buy locally produced food and farm shops etc.

Volume, Capacity and Measuring

Next week in maths we are going to be learning about measuring.
We will be working outside in the playground measuring with metre sticks, trundle wheels and tape measures.

We will be working inside measuring volume and capacity with a range of standard and non-standard containers.

We will also be weighing objects using scales and recording the weight of them to compare.

To be able to measure accurately, we need to understand how to read various scales and units of measure. This will be the focus of our activities this week.

Our End Of SATs Party!

We celebrated the end of a busy and intense half term on Friday with a party! We earnt it and have all worked very hard over the last few weeks!!

We had some party food and then played a few games, dancing and musical statues, here we are enjoying ourselves!!

Year 5's Aztec Exhibition!

On Thursday before we broke up, year 5 offered us the chance to come and view their Aztec exhibition. They showcased everything they had been doing in their topic, and they had also made games that we had the opportunity to play, costumes for us to try on, and information for us to find out about!

Our Fantastic Art Day!!!

Thanks to the wonderful Miss Coomber we all enjoyed a fantastic fun art day today with lots of wonderful activities. It was great fun and we took part in some very creative tasks, and all had such fun after working so hard last week and making Miss Morris so proud!!!

We had a go at some calligraphy with the special pens, made our own board games, developed our individual ideas through seaside sketches and added watercolour to our calligraphy door hangers!!

Say Something Kind

Thanks to our year 4 school councillors, Issy and Lois, we now have a 'Say Something Kind' board in our class. Mrs Warner had this idea in her class and the class councillors have rolled it out across each class now! Whenever we have something kind to say about each other we write it on our 'Say Something Kind' board and then celebrate it together!

PE This Term: Athletics!

This half term we are focusing on athletics on P.E and are developing our throwing skills, both underarm and overarm, our running, jumping and relay. We have been having lots of fun so far and we are displying some fantastic skills already!!!

The Night Sky!

This week across literacy and topic, we are learning about the night sky and the features of our solar system so we can include some facts in our non-fiction text. Here we are making solar systems out of play dough, using pastels to create a night scene and making our information leaflets using purple mash about the night sky.

Literacy and ICT - The Seaside

We started our seaside topic today by making our own stories about the seaside using the 2-Publisher software on 'Purple Mash'. We made sure our stories had a beginning middle and end and tried to include our VCOP skills we have been learning over the year. Here some of us are using the mini laptops to make our stories...

Our topic next term is the seaside!! Hopefully the weather will get a bit better to go with our topic!!

Biscuit Decorating End of Term Treat

Hope you are all enjoying the holidays and haven't made yourself sick with too much chocolate!! Here are the photos from out biscuit decorating treat at the end of the term.... I hope they tasted yummy!!

Easter!!

This week we have been doing lots of activities around the Christian celebration Easter....we have been making our own mod-rock egg cups and decorating them using the Pysanky art of decorating eggs at Easter. Pysanky is a Ukraine tradition at Easter time and is the art of decorating your egg with a meaning depending on the design you choose....

We are also making our own Easter palm crosses using green sugar paper and we have been looking closely at Palm Sunday.

Math Snow Day Games...The spinners!

Start by choosing 2 spinners and then set your value (in class we used any of the top 5 depending what you feel most confident with) and then spin them and decide what operation you will use in the middle and work out your answer before revealing it!! Disney Animations!

Fantasia!!!!!

In literacy this week we are focusing on the clip from Fantasia 'The Sorcerers Apprentice' and discussing the roles of the different characters and what we would magic if we were a Sorcerer!!

DT: Disney Hand Puppets

In Topic over the past couple of weeks we have been designing and making our own Disney hand puppets. We worked hard designing and labelling our initial idea and then using felt we have begun sewing and adding features to make our puppet.

2013 World Book Day!!!

This year our theme in year 2 was Roger Hargreaves....there were lots of Mr Men and Little Miss characters in our classroom today!!! We did lots of fun activities around the books and enjoyed the stories together. Which is your favourite character?!! Here we all are...

World Maths Day 2013!!!!

Today was World Maths Day and we had lots of fun competing in the worldwide competition. We played against children in lots of different countries, Poland, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, North Korea to name a few!!!

Happy Half Term - Our New Topic!

Hi everyone hope you had a nice half term! Next half term our topic is 'Walt Disney, Fairy Tales and looking at the roles of different characters'. To start our topic we are going to be looking at a slightly alternative fairytale next week, called 'The Clocktower'. This piece of text looks at a beautiful dancer and we will be examining her role in the story, what happens to her, and thinking about how she got there and what might happen next!

Milkshake Party Reward!

After lots of hard work and super efforts in class, we earned our milkshake reward party and on Friday, celebrated with a pirate film to finish our pirate topic, milkshake hot chocolate and biscuits!! A fantastic hour was had by all and we all filled our boots with the yummy food and drink!!

Oracy Session!

As part of Miss Kitchen's gifted and talented role within school, each class has a box of oracy cards. These are ques questions to promote discussion within the children around subjects that we might not always think about within a normal day to day at school. In year 2 we try and have a specific session using the box on a Friday after maths and this week our session was around the card... 'Mystery Item' Describe an object you are thinking about, give 5 clues. We had lots of fun thinking of all sorts of weird and wonderful items. Try it at home with your family!!

 

Drama Inspired by Maia Walczak 'The Black Hat'

Last week in literacy we were comparing other text by 'Maia Walczak' to the 'Silent Blue Book' we looked at the week before. One of the text we were examining was 'The Black Hat' and we enjoyed making our own pieces of drama up to represent how we would react if we found a magical black hat in the woods.

We all really enjoyed making up our own mini performances and we decided we wanted to take part in more drama across the curriculum! Here we are engaged in the moment...

Visual Literacy 'The Silent Red Book' Maia Walczak

Next week in literacy, we are going to be watching 'The Silent Red Book' by Maia Walczaka and comparing it to the text we watched last week, The Silent Blue Book. When you watch it, think about the characters, describe them, where do we think they have come from? What happens when they meet?

Attendance Treat...Classopoly... Get Out Of Jail Free!!

Last week I was so very proud of you all our attendance was 100%!!!!!! We rolled in classopoly assembly and landed on 'Get out of jail free'. Hmmmmm what did that mean?? We all got a great surprise when Miss Stephens marched us out of assembly and into the green room, to 'do it Gangnam Style'!! Lots of fun and dancing for us all!!!

Visual Literacy: Silent Blue Book

This week in literacy we have been using our inference skills to pick apart a visual text called 'The Silent Blue Book' by Maia Walczak. There was no talking on the text, just music and we were working together to decide what we thought the story was about, what the author was trying to portray and how we felt about the text. Some of us found it so emotional it brought a few tears!! Here we are sharing ideas, listening to each other and writing our views.

Visual Literacy 'The Silent Blue Book'

Next week in literacy, we are going to be extending our pirate topic further and reading 'The Spell Shell'  by Roderick Hunt and then developing our interpreting skills by looking at 'The Silent Blue Book' by Maia Walczak. It is a piece of text with no words and we are going to be deciding what we think is happening to the character, her feelings, where she goes and why and what is the relevance of the fox.

A Pirate Times Table Hunt!!

This week as part of our maths we are practising our times tables, our 2's, 5's and 10's. We went on a pirates times table hunt around the hall to practise. We had to find the questions and then work out the answer, writing it on out clipboards......

Using Purple Mash on our 'Class Mates' to represent our Pirate data!!

Today we were having a go at representing data on pirates using our 'Class Mate' mini laptops to go on purple mash and record our data. Purple mash was very clever how it converted our data into different types of graphs and charts and we then used these to analyse our data.

Log on to purple mash at home and make up so data to input and practise!!

Pirate Art!!

Over the past week or so we have been having a go at some pirate artwork using a sponging technique to make the waves and then adding a Galleon and pirate scene using oil pastels to blend over the paint. The finished pieces look really effective!!!
